The Community Visitors Scheme - a commonwealth government initiative The Community Visitors Scheme is the Queensland Community Care Network's longest-running program. It is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, and is part of the Commonwealth Government's initiatives to enhance the rights of older people living in residential aged care facilities.
What is a Community Visitor Community visitors befriend residents of nursing homes who may be lonely and who would like their own special visitor.
What does a Community Visitor do? As a community visitor, you will be asked to set aside some time each month to visit someone in a nursing home. Depending on you, and the person you visit, you may spend this time keeping each other company and having a talk; or you might decide to go on outings to a gallery or a park...or any one of a number of activities.
Who will I visit? QCCN will make every effort match you with a resident who shares with you a strong interest or long-standing hobby. It could be anything from gardening or tapestry to Australian Rules football. We want to ensure that you get as much out of befriending someone, as they will get out of your visits!
Will I receive training? QCCN also provides training for all of its volunteers to ensure that they understand the needs of the elderly and have the skills to cope with issues that may arise. QCCN is available to assist you throughout your participation in the Scheme. In addition, we plan regular activities for our volunteers to meet each other, and you will receive the QCCN Newsletter.Become a Community Visitor If you would like to apply to become a Community Visitor, please email us to receive an application form or click here to download the application forms as a pdf document (Approx 2.1mB) - you will require Adobe Acrobat Reader to view/print the application form.
